Ultra Violet Radiation: The sun radiates energy over a broad
spectrum of wavelengths. Scientists classify UV radiation into three
types or bands - UVA, UVB and UVC. The stratospheric ozone layer
absorbs UVC and some but not all UVB radiation. UVA and UVB are
responsible for sunburn and other adverse health effects including
eye problems.
Sunglasses are one of our best lines of defense
against harmful UV radiation. Only wear sugnlasses labeled 98 to
100% UV protection. Don't be fooled by the color or shade of the
lenses. A darker lens does not mean better protection. In fact,
a dark lens without adequate UV protection allows the pupil to dilate
letting in an increased amount of damaging rays.
|
| Effects
of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) are cumulative. The longer you
leave your eyes under protected, the greater the risk of damage to
your eyes. Children are at an even greater risk because they
may be outdoors for longer periods of time. Their corneas and natural
lenses are clear allowing greater levels of UVR into the eye. Over
time, this accumulated exposure leaves them vulnerable to long-term
damage. |

UVR can cause development of cataract and damage
the conjunctiva, cornea and retina. It increases the risk of developing
age-related macular degeneration (AMD)*, and UVR can damage the
skin surrounding the eyes. About 10% of all skin cancer occurs on
the eyelids.
*AMD is the leading cause of blindness
in people over the age of 50. Recent studies show that one person
in six, at the age of 55, will develop AMD
